About the course

  • Monet's Garden(Kitagawa-mura Village, Umaji- mura Village)

    A reproduction of the impressionist painter Claude Monet's home garden. This is the only garden that has been allowed to officially use the name "Monet's Garden". Seasonal flowers such as the water lily can be seen in bloom, and during some seasons the garden is illuminated at night, attracting many visitors from all around Japan.
    This is the ideal place to unwind from the daily grind of life.

  • The old town of Nahari (Nahari Town)

    Nahari Town is the passageway to Awa Province, and flourished as the junction of the Tosa Tokai Road leading to Muroto and the Noneyama Road leading to None and Kannoura. The town produced many enterpreneurs and the structures that capture the traditional culture of the town can still be seen today

  • Tano Town Daruma Sunset

    As the sun sets, the sunlight refracts off the ocean's surface, creating the appearance of two suns setting. If you're lucky, you can see this phenomenon during autumn to winter. Once you see it, you will never forget Its beauty.

  • Myojinguchi Bridge

About the course

  • Gomen-Nahari Line

    This well-known line commonly called the "Gomen- Nahari line" connects Gomen Station in Nankoku to Nahari Station in Nahari. Much of the ride goes along the Pacific Ocean and many passengers take it just to see the beautiful coastal scenery.

  • Ioki Cave

    This cave emerged from an accumulation of geological formations from 300 years ago that were eroded by the sea. About a minute's walk from the national road, along a stream you will find the entrance to this 40-meter long cave.

  • Umaji Onsen Hot Spring

    The sodium bicarbonate and chloride properties of this hot spring are effective in treating wounds, burns and rheumatic diseases. The bathing room offers an amazing view of the Yasuda river and mountains of Umaji. It is also knows for its beautifying effects on skin.
    At the restaurant, enjoy delicacies such as hot pots made with wild boar or the Tosa Jiro egg and yuzu hot pot.

    Go for a ride on the forest railway steam locomotive replica that runs along a stream near the Umaji Onsen Hot Spring.
    This spectacular 300-meter ride through the natural scenery is a delight for both children and adults. Sit in the conductor's seat and experience being a conductor. The popular Umaji Onsen Station bento lunch is also available.

  • Yuzu no Mori Processing Plant Tour
    (Umaji Village)

    Get an inside peek at the assembly line where the nationally famous yuzu drink Gokkun is made.
    Purchse yuzu products made at the Yuzu no Mori Factory on site. These products make the perfect souvenirs.

  • Makaichotte-ya Information Center

    This information center is located at the entrance to Umaji Village.
    Receive driving directions and tour guide information. You can also make reservations to make your own mage-wappa wooden box.

  • Yuzu Harvesting((Kitagawa Yuzu Okoku)

    Kochi produces 40% of the nation's yuzu. Yuzu is harvested in Kitagawa Village every year from October to November. Try the harvesting experience for yourself.

  • Roadside Station Tanoeki-ya

    The roadside station Tanoeki-ya is located at Tano Station along the Gomen-Nahari Railway line. The shop features plenty of local produce and goods along with light meals. It also has an information corner where you can find "fresh" information.

  • Ioki Cave

    This cave emerged from an accumulation of geological formations from 300 years ago that were eroded by the sea. About a minute's walk from the national road, along a stream you will find the entrance to this 40-meter long cave.

  • Kitadera Temple (Yasuda Town)

    Established at the asme time as Kounomine Temple, this temple known as the temple of the North has a history as deep as Hotsumisaki Temple (the East Temple of Muroto) and Kongocho Temple (the West Temple of Muroto).
    Kitadera houses 10% of Kochi Prefecture's Important Cultural Properties (sculptures) including the wooden seated statue of Yakushi Nyorai, which is the principal image of the temple, along with nine other buddhist stattues.

  • Kounomine Temple (Yasuda Town)

    A Shingon Buddhism Buzan sect temple in Tonohama. This temple, also called Chikurin-zan Jizo-in is dedicated to the Eleven-faced Kannon. It is the 27th site of the 88-temple pilgrimage. Located atop a steep mountain road called Mattate, meaning vertical, this temple is known to be the most challenging of the 88 temples to reach, and some refer to it as the "falling Henro" temple.

    This walking tour offered by the Umaji Village Tour Guide Club goes along the Yuzu Road, which has become a Japan Heritage.
    Experience the history left behind from what was once a flourishing lumber town.

  • Konrin-ji Temple, Yakushi-do Hall

    The Konrin-ji Temple Yakushi-do Hall is made in a unique style where all the panels on the under side of the eave are flush, not exposing the rafters. This gives it a beautiful, clean look while using high quality cypress and cedar.
    This is a valuable cultural remnant that represents the architectural sophistication of the region.

  • Incline Cable Car

    A red rail is set in place on the steep mountain face in front of Umaji Hot Spring. The incline cable car which is now for sightseeing purposes uses the same hydraulic system that was once used to transport lumber up steep mountain faces. Travel slowly up the mountain in the cable car and reach a destination that overlooks the entire village.

  • Umaji Bakery

    The Umaji Bakery is run by a lovely couple. Enter the bakery and be greeted by the delicious scent of bread and coffee. Have a taste of local nature in the yuzu and sweet red bean bread or try the baguette which has been baked carefully to perfection.

  • Yanase Dam

    This electricity-producing dam is in the main stream of the Nahari River in the north of Kitagawa Village. The scenery is beatiful and surreal.
    It is one of the largest rockfill dams in western Japan with a height of 115 meters, a length of 202 meters, and a water capacity of 72.5 million cubic meters.

  • Yanase no Yu Hot Spring

    The plentiful hydrogen carbonate ion in this hot spring is known to soften and clarify skin. It is popular for making skin smooth and moisturized. Bathe in the lush forest scenery of the Yanase mountains.
